MPVO
An MPVO (Medium Power Variable Optic) is a compact and lightweight rifle scope with magnification typically ranging from 2x or 4x up to 10x or 18x, designed for mid-to-long-range precision (300 to over 1,000 yards). Unlike LPVOs (Low Power Variable Optics), which start at true 1x for close-quarters, MPVOs offer better target identification and glass quality at distance, making them ideal for designated marksman (DMR) and special purpose rifle (SPR) setups, often paired with an offset red dot sight for close-range use.
For mixed mid-range shooting (300-800 yards) with AR-15s or bolt-action rifles, a Mid-Power Variable Optic (MPVO) is a great choice, offering more magnification than a Low-Power Variable Optic (LPVO) without the bulk of a High-Power Variable Optic (HPVO), which is designed for long-range use (1,000+ yards). LPVOs suit dynamic situations like 3-gun competitions or home defense, while MPVOs are ideal for reconnaissance, open terrain hunting, and barricade competitions.
Typical magnification ranges for scopes are 2-10x, 3-18x, or 2.5-15x, balancing a wide field of view at low power for quick transitions with adequate zoom for precise shots at 600 to 1,000 yards. The 2-10x scope is ideal for tactical ARs, while the 3-18x scope is better suited for Designated Marksman Rifle (DMR) roles due to its parallax adjustment and improved light transmission.
First Focal Plane (FFP) reticles are preferred for Medium Power Variable Optics (MPVOs) because they scale with magnification, ensuring consistent holdovers and ranging, making them ideal for tactical and competitive use. In contrast, Second Focal Plane (SFP) reticles remain fixed in size, which suits hunting at mid-to-high power, but are less versatile for quick low-power shots.
Exposed turrets on MPVOs allow shooters to easily make precise elevation and windage adjustments for long-range shots (500-1,000 yards). Unlike capped turrets, they provide tactile and audible clicks (e.g., 0.1 MIL or 1/4 MOA) for quick corrections without tools, making them ideal for tactical and competitive scenarios like the Precision Rifle Series (PRS).
High-quality MPVOs (Medium Power Variable Optics) are designed for durability, featuring waterproofing (IPX7+), fog-proofing, shock resistance, and aircraft-grade aluminum construction. These optics are ideal for tactical operations, harsh hunting conditions, and competitions.
MPVOs (Medium Power Variable Optics) typically have objective lenses ranging from 32mm to 44mm, balancing light-gathering ability and weight. A 32mm lens is ideal for compact AR rifles, while a 44mm lens enhances low-light performance for hunting or tactical use.
MPVOs (Medium Power Variable Optics) offer a versatile magnification range of 2x to 18x for mid-to-long-range accuracy while remaining compact and durable for rugged environments. They outperform fixed-power prisms and heavy high-power scopes by providing better target identification at 500 to 1,000 yards compared to LPVOs (1x-6x/10x) and are lighter and faster than HPVOs (4x-25x+). Their compatibility with offset red dots for close-quarters battle (CQB) adds to their flexibility.
